Fentanyl's Fatal Footprint: The Shocking  Spike in Bay Area Overdose Deaths

Bay Area drug deaths have dramatically spiked since 2017, with the rate of overdoses leading to death increasing by over 250%.

In the past year alone, over 2,000 Bay Area residents have died from drug overdoses, compared to around 800 people ten years ago.

While all regions of the Bay Area have seen significant increases in the number of deaths, San Francisco stands out as it has by far the most deaths and the sharpest increase in the rate of overdose fatalities.

Illicit fentanyl is the driving force behind this rapid surge in drug deaths. Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, is an extremely potent substance, up to 50 times more powerful than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine.

This poses a grave and concerning threat to our communities, as escalating quantities of street drugs are being laced with fentanyl to boost their potency and addictiveness. Even minuscule amounts of fentanyl can prove lethal, putting not only hardened addicts but also casual, experimental drug users of all ages at serious risk of fatal overdose.
